Fishing the Spud
Here’s a method that has won me matches with 100lb weights at Railway Lakes (Barford Complex, Norfolk), Decoy Lakes, (Peterborough), and a weight over 300lb at Rolfs Lake, Oxford.
The Potato
The humble potato punched from a slice is great bait for fishing shallow in Summer for carp of all sizes you’ll encounter in a match (ie 1-20lb). The reason is that it stays on the hook. Feed is pellet and the trick is to ensure your spud hookbaits mimic the feed pellets in both size and colour.
This requires careful slicing of the potato to get the right length of pellet and then punching with the appropriate size meat punch. Once the potato pellets have been cut, they need to be coloured.
For normal brown pellet, either instant coffee or gravy browning will do the trick. However, my best weight on spud (310lb 12oz) came to spud hookers dyed yellow and sprinkled with banana milk shake; feed pellet was Banana Freedom Feeds Fishmeal Free Pellet!
I have caught fishing on the deck with spud but it’s really an up-in-the-water method. It works everywhere - I went to a carp lake in Belgium and caught shallow using spud.
Rigs
Rigs and feeding are what you would use for fishing up in the water with pellet. My only point is to use as small a hook as you can get away with (for 4mm pellet I use 911 hooks in sizes 18 to 16) and, to avoid bumping fish, nick the potato with the hook rather than burying the hook in the spud.
Putting it Together
Finally, I like to make the pellets 2 days before I want to use them as they soften a little in the gravy browning or coffee (a personal thing, but I often add a little pellet oil too).
